JEE Main is a national-level engineering entrance exam conducted by NTA for admission to undergraduate engineering programs (B.E./B.Tech) at NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions. It serves as a gateway exam for JEE Advanced, which is required for admission to IITs.
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech): The exam consists of 90 questions (30 each from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) for a total of 300 marks. The duration is 3 hours. Questions are divided into two types: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with 4 options each and Numerical Value Questions (where candidates need to enter a numerical answer). There is negative marking of -1 mark for each incorrect MCQ answer, while no marks are deducted for incorrect numerical answers.
Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning): Paper 2 is divided into Mathematics (20 MCQs + 10 numerical questions), Aptitude (50 MCQs), and Drawing (2 questions) for B.Arch, or Planning (25 questions) for B.Planning. The duration is 3 hours for B.Arch and 3.5 hours for B.Planning.
Syllabus: The syllabus comprehensively covers Class 11 and 12 topics as per the NCERT curriculum. Physics includes Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics, and more. Chemistry covers Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry. Mathematics includes Algebra, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Calculus, and Statistics. Candidates should refer to the official NTA syllabus document for detailed topic-wise breakdown.
Admit cards for JEE Main 2026 Session 1 are typically released 3-4 days before the examination dates. For Session 1 (January 21-30, 2026), admit cards should be available by mid-January 2026. Candidates will be notified via email and SMS once the admit cards are available for download from the official NTA website.
Candidates must carry a printed copy of their admit card along with a valid photo ID proof (such as Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Driving License, Passport, or Voter ID). The name on the admit card must match exactly with the ID proof. It is also advisable to carry 2-3 passport-size photographs matching the ones uploaded during registration.
Yes, candidates can appear for both sessions of JEE Main 2026. The best of the two scores will be considered for preparing the merit list. This provides candidates with an opportunity to improve their performance if they are not satisfied with their Session 1 results.
For Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech): Each correct MCQ answer awards +4 marks, and each incorrect MCQ answer deducts -1 mark. For Numerical Value Questions, each correct answer awards +4 marks, and no marks are deducted for incorrect answers. Unanswered questions receive 0 marks. The total marks for Paper 1 is 300.
Results for JEE Main 2026 will be declared on the official NTA website (jeemain.nta.ac.in). Candidates can check their results by logging in with their application number and date of birth. Session 1 results are expected by February 12, 2026, and Session 2 results by April 20, 2026. Scorecards will also be available for download from the candidate portal.
Candidates must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) examination in 2024, 2025, or appearing in 2026. For general category candidates, they must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks (or be in the top 20 percentile) in Class 12. For SC/ST candidates, the minimum required is 65% aggregate marks. However, these criteria are for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. For appearing in the exam, there is no minimum percentage requirement.
Generally, changes to examination center or date are not allowed after the admit card is issued. However, in exceptional circumstances (such as technical issues or other valid reasons), candidates may contact the NTA helpline. It is recommended to download and verify all details on the admit card as soon as it is available to identify any discrepancies early.
Candidates are not allowed to carry electronic devices (mobile phones, calculators, smartwatches, pagers), study material, bags, wallets, or any communication devices. Food items, water bottles (unless transparent), stationery items (except ballpoint pens), and any other items specified by NTA are also prohibited. Only admit card, photo ID, and transparent water bottles are typically allowed.
